Infertility problems can be very frustrating and can even lead to feelings of sadness and isolation. As a fertility specialist, your reproductive endocrinologist is there to provide you and your partner with the care, support, and guidance you deserve on the road to parenthood. If you are getting ready to see a specialist to help realize your dreams of starting a family, consider the following questions that you may want to ask your Alabama fertility doctor during your next appointment.
Does my lifestyle affect my fertility?
In some cases, lifestyle choices such as diet, activity level, and emotional health can affect your ability to become pregnant. Although your doctor will probably discuss this with you, make sure that you have all of your questions answered and make the changes necessary to improve your fertility.
What diagnostic tests do you recommend?
If the cause of your condition is unclear, your physician may recommend a panel of diagnostic tests to better determine the underlying cause of your fertility problems. Be sure to ask if there are any risks associated with testing, if your partner also needs to be tested, and how accurate the tests are.
What are my treatment options?
Having a variety of treatment options is important to help you find the simplest and most cost-effective way to reach your goals. Does your physician recommend medications, assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), or both? Being aware of your options can help you decide with your doctor which is the best suited for you and your partner.

Infertility is a common problem in the United States, affecting approximately 7.3 million American women according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fortunately, many effective treatment options have been introduced in recent years to help those struggling with infertility to realize their dreams of parenthood. At New Leaders in Fertility & Endocrinology, we are proud to offer many of these assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to our patients.
In vitro fertilization has the highest success rate of any ART treatment, with 34 percent of cycles resulting in a live birth in the year 2008. The CDC reports that in 2010, approximately 154,417 ART cycles were performed in 443 reporting clinics. Of these over 150,000 cycles, 47,102 live births occurred, resulting in 61,561 infants. When calculated, the success rate for ARTs in 2010 was approximately 40 percent, increasing significantly over the 2008 numbers. Although a 34 or 40 percent success rate per cycle may seem low, placing it in comparison with the likelihood that a fertile couple will conceive in any given cycle (20 percent) can put the numbers into perspective.
When considering success rates associated with assisted reproductive technology, it is important to remember that success depends on a variety of factors:
- The woman’s age: This becomes especially important if a woman is using her own eggs for the cycle.
- Number of embryos transferred: Although the number of embryos transferred does not affect the success rates of the cycle, it does increase the risk of multiple pregnancy.
NewLIFE is dedicated to providing our patients with the most advanced, compassionate treatments available. Tubal ligation, commonly known as tube tying, is a procedure which is used to close women’s fallopian tubes and prevent pregnancy. Some women who have undergone tubal ligation may later wish to reverse the procedure. At New Leaders in Fertility and Endocrinology, we are able to reopen one or both fallopian tubes for approximately 95% of women who undergo tubal ligation reversal. Continue reading to learn more about this fertility procedure from one of the best fertility clinics in Alabama.
- Why Tubal Ligation Reversal is Performed
Some women elect to undergo sterilization procedures such as tubal ligation because they believe that they do not want children or that they are finished bearing children. However, unexpected life changes such as divorce can change a woman’s outlook on her fertility. In other cases, women simply decide that they no longer wish to be sterile. No matter the reason, women who wish to reverse tubal ligation should seek medical advice to determine if this is possible.
- What You Can Expect
Before you undergo surgery, your physician will administer tests to determine if you have a good chance of becoming pregnant after the surgery. At New Leaders in Fertility and Endocrinology, approximately 71% of our patients whose tubes are successfully reopened later become pregnant.
- How Tubal Ligation Reversal is Completed
During the tubal ligation reversal procedure, the portions of the fallopian tubes that are blocked will be removed through a small incision in the abdomen. The surgeon will use a microscope to assist in this process. After the blocked sections of the fallopian tubes have been removed, the surgeon will use small, absorbable stitches to repair the fallopian tubes. This procedure can be completed on an out-patient basis.
Tubal ligation does not have to be a permanent treatment. At New Leaders in Fertility and Endocrinology, we are committed to providing our patients with the best options to promote their fertility.
